Assignment on stock performance


Style and format This assignment requires the use of MS Excel or some other statistical program that will allow you to complete the required calculations. All computer workings (formulae only) are to be shown in an appendix.

Format Requirements
The word limit is 1,500 words (this does not include the reference list). All sources must be referenced. The assignment must be typed in the Times New Roman font, size 12 and line spacing 1.5. Please ensure that your name, student number and page number are displayed on each page and a signed cover sheet must be included.

Failure to meet any of these presentation requirements will result in a loss of marks.

Detailed information:-

Two main parts form this essay as follow:  Part A (15 Marks)
Retrieve the stock that was assigned to you.

Gather data from websites such as yahoo finance or tradingroom.com.au. Data up to one year will be sufficient, and is available
free of charge from the above or other websites. Please note your data sources. All solutions to each question should be presented in tables that are readable to a novice investor. In the body of your report, ensure you show how computed your calculations. In other words, show the formulae that you used. 
i) Calculate the mean return, standard deviation, variance and holding period return for your stock. ( 5 marks)
ii) Calculate the beta of the stock. ( 5 marks)
iii) Calculate the Expected Return of the stock. ( 5 marks)

Part B (30 Marks)
i) Describe the business activities of the company you have been asked to examine. ( 5 marks)
ii) Calculate the Earnings Per Share (EPS) and Price Earnings (PE) Ratio.(2 marks).
Comment on the performance of your company:
(a) Relative to the ASX 200. (4 marks)
(b) Relative to the sector it is classified in (Hint: take note of the GICS. (4 marks)

iii) Discuss the impact, if any, on your company's securities prices following public and non public announcements, eg dividends declared, earnings results which occurred in between July 2010 and July 2011. (3 marks)

iv) Provide advice to an investor whether to utilise a buy hold or short sell strategy regarding your company's shares. (2 marks)
